The recent surge in fuel prices has sent shockwaves across Nigeria not only in owerri sparking fears of a renewed cost-of-living crisis. The price of petrol has skyrocketed to as high as N1,330 per litre, with predictions suggesting it could reach N2,000 per litre if global tensions persist 

The impact is being felt nationwide, with transportation costs rising and businesses struggling to cope. "Fuel prices have an outsized influence on Nigeria's consumer basket because they directly affect transportation, food distribution, and industrial production," says Billy Gillis-Harry, national president of Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) ¹.

What's Driving the Price Hike?

The ongoing war in the Middle East has caused a significant supply disruption in the global oil market, leading to increased prices. Nigeria, being a net importer of refined petroleum products, is particularly vulnerable to these price fluctuations ² ¹.

Experts suggest that the government should prioritize exchange-rate stability, improve foreign exchange liquidity, and boost non-oil export earnings to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices.
